VO65
- Sailing Poland has just acquired a Volvo Ocean 65. The new boat is no other than ex-MAPFRE, the red boat that came second in the last Volvo Ocean Race, skippered by one of the best, Xabi Fernandez. This bold move gives the Polish crew a bunch of fresh options, taking part in the world’s most famous races included. Until now, Poland had neither such a boat, nor such ambitious plans for crew racing. Putting a hand on the Volvo Ocean 65 allows training and competing with the very best in every corner of the sailing world. There is no need to introduce ex-MAPFRE. This boat, flying recently under Spanish colours, has done two Volvo Ocean Races (2014/15 & 2017/18) and is one of the 8 units built as one-design for the last two editions of VOR. It was skippered successfully by Xabi Fernandez and Iker Martinez. „We achieved a lot of great success on this boat” – says Fernandez, who announced MAPFRE team stepping onboard IMOCA for a nearest The Ocean Race campaign. “We wish Sailing Poland crew all the best to continue this great journey of MAPFRE boat and we hope to see each other in the next edition of Ocean Race in 2021”. Professional Sailing Poland Race Team crew is working now in Lisbon, a base for all Volvo Ocean 65 boats. A handover procedure is underway as well as preparations for a transatlantic jump to the Caribbean for a first racing of the coming season. „We’ve just made a few sea trials and all I want to say is that it’s an incredible boat” – says Maciej Marczewski, Sailing Poland responsible for the new boat. „She is in perfect shape, with a container of spares, so we can just go sailing without any further expenses”. According to Sailing Poland’s guidelines, onboard of this boat there will also be a place for young and promising competitors from Olympic classes. In the future, they could become a part of a regular, professional Sailing Poland Race Team. Details are being decided individually by now. „To acquire this boat was a step forward in our mission to become one of the largest Sailing organizations in Poland” – says Piotr Zygo, Sailing Poland’s CEO. „Does that mean a start in The Ocean Race 2021/22? For sure it’s a goal. Our next step will be acquiring a sponsor and a budget for this project”. Until now, there were no such ambitions in Poland.
